Holdenhurst WRC

Location: Bournemouth

Project Type: Water Treatment

Client: Wessex Water

Project Duration: 24 months

Contract Value: £14.5m

A £30 million investment by Wessex Water to protect Bournemouth’s popular beaches

At Holdenhurst WRC on the outskirts of Bournemouth, we are working with Wessex Water on a £30 million investment to protect the town’s popular beaches, by increasing capacity and reducing the discharge of untreated wastewater.

The WRC serves a population of around 180,000, which increases significantly during the summer months, and the addition of new equipment will ensure sewage treatment keeps pace with a community expected to grow further.

Retaining an extra nine million litres of water

A new 65-metre-long storm tank, capable of retaining an extra nine million litres of water, will help reduce the automatic release of untreated diluted wastewater from storm overflows.

The project will also boost the removal of harmful chemicals, including many frequently found in many household products, from wastewater to protect local rivers and coastlines.

Delivering Client Objectives

As part of our commitment to reach net zero by 2040, we have transitioned to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel in lieu of diesel. We now fuel our facilities and plants with HVO, a renewable diesel fuel that is used in place of fossil fuels in all our diesel plant and machinery. This is significantly contributing to our carbon reduction strategy by reducing associated carbon emissions by over 90%.
