About the Role

We are looking for a motivated and ambitious Graduate Trainee Planner to join our growing project controls team supporting the delivery of water infrastructure and capital projects across the UK water sector.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate to develop a career in project planning, scheduling, and programme management. You will work alongside experienced planners and project teams, learning how to develop, maintain, and analyse construction programmes and NEC contract programmes that support the successful delivery of complex engineering and construction projects.

The role will be primarily office-based in Bristol, with occasional visits to project sites to gain a practical understanding of construction activities and project progress.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of project programmes for water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
  • Learn to create, update, and monitor construction schedules using Microsoft Project and Primavera P6.
  • Support the preparation and management of NEC contract programmes in accordance with contractual requirements.
  • Collect progress information from project teams and site personnel.
  • Update programme logic, durations, milestones, and progress data.
  • Produce planning reports, dashboards, and programme updates for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in programme review meetings and planning workshops.
  • Assist with identifying programme risks, opportunities, and potential delays.
  • Support project teams in understanding programme performance and key project milestones.
  • Conduct occasional site visits to verify progress and gain insight into construction methodologies and sequencing.
  • Develop an understanding of project controls, critical path analysis, and earned value principles.

Training and Development

The successful candidate will receive structured training and mentoring, including:

  • Introduction to project planning and scheduling principles.
  • Training in Microsoft Project.
  • Training in Oracle Primavera P6.
  • Understanding and application of NEC contracts and programme requirements.
  • Development of critical path analysis and programme reporting skills.
  • Exposure to major water sector capital delivery projects.
  • Ongoing support from experienced project controls professionals.

Requirements

Essential

  • Degree (or expected degree) in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, Quantity Surveying, Geography, Mathematics, Business Management, or a related discipline.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good numerical ability and attention to detail.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to learn new software and technical processes.
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable

  • An interest in construction, engineering, infrastructure, or project controls.
  • Knowledge of project planning principles.
  • Experience using scheduling software such as Microsoft Project or Primavera P6.
  • Understanding of NEC contracts.
  • Placement year or internship experience within construction or engineering.
